October 5-6, 2009: Research Symposium, Texas A&M- CONACYT Collaborative Research Grant Program
The Texas A&M University Center in Mexico hosted the annual Research Symposium funded under the Texas A&M–CONACYT: Collaborative Research Grant Program. This program was established in 2001 between Texas A&M University and CONACYT to enhance research opportunities in areas that are of importance to both Mexico and the US. To be eligible for the program, projects must be jointly led by a principal investigator (PI) from a qualifying Mexican institution as well as Texas A&M. The Office of the Vice President for Research at Texas A&M administers the program at the university.

Dr. Jeffrey Seemann, Vice President for Research at Texas A&M; Ms. Katherine Rojo del Busto, Executive Associate Vice President for Administration and Legal Affairs/Chief of Staff; Ms. Lisa Woods, Assistant Vice President for External Affairs, Outreach and Engagement; Dr. Robert Webb, Interim Dean of Graduate Studies; Dr. Emily Ashworth, Executive Associate Vice President for International Programs; and Dr. Roger Norton, Executive Director of Latin American Programs, traveled to Mexico City for the event.

Principal investigators who received funding in 2007 and performed research in 2008 presented the results of their joint research projects during this year’s symposium. The event began with an opening dinner on Monday, October 5, and on Tuesday, October 6, ten bilateral research teams presented their research findings to representatives from CONACYT, Texas A&M´s Office of the Vice President for Research and International Programs Office. Later in the evening, the teams were able to discuss their projects with a larger audience during a reception and poster session also held at the Texas A&M University Center in Mexico. Maestro Juan Carlos Romero Hicks, Director General of CONACYT, and Dr. Jeffrey Seemann, Vice President for Research at Texas A&M, provided opening remarks to the researchers and guests from industry, government, and academic institutions in Mexico. October 2–4, 2009: Dr. Ron Knutson holds agricultural workshop at the Texas A&M University Center in Mexico
Dr. Ron Knutson, Regents Professor Emeritus of the Agricultural and Food Policy Center (AFPC) and the Department of Agricultural Economics at Texas A&M University; Dr. Pat Westhoff, from the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute at the University of Missouri; Dr. Pablo Sherwell Cabello’06, Adjunct General Director of Economic Analysis and Public Policy in SAGARPA (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food); and Lic. Iris Sánchez Galicia, also from SAGARPA, worked at the Mexico Center to continue developing a baseline projection of Mexican agriculture production, consumptions, and prices from 2009-2018. This was the group’s third workshop held at the Mexico Center since August 2008.

 
October 1-4, 2009: Maria Alves participates in the UNAM Educational Fair "Estudia Sin Fronteras"
Maria Alves from the Office for Latin American Programs at Texas A&M University participated in the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México’s international fair. Through its inter-institutional collaboration office, UNAM organized its first educational fair “Estudia Sin Fronteras”. The purpose of this event was to promote study abroad opportunities to the UNAM community such as exchange and cultural programs, language courses, research projects, postgraduate educational programs, and scholarships. Representatives from cultural and educational institutions of countries with diplomatic presence in Mexico as well as financing entities and representatives of schools and universities abroad were invited to participate in the fair. More than 5,000 students and faculty attended the event.

 
September 2-4, 2009: Dr. Jeffrey Seemann, Vice President for Research at Texas A&M University, attends Border Governors Conference in Monterrey, Mexico
Dr. Jeffrey Seemann, Vice President for Research at Texas A&M University, traveled to Monterrey, Mexico, from September 2 to 4, with a delegation from Texas A&M including Ms. Katherine Rojo del Busto, Executive Associate Vice President for Administration and Legal Affairs/Chief of Staff; Dr. Barry Lawrence and Dr. Jorge Leon, Co-Directors of the Global Manufacturing and Distribution Research Initiative; Dr. Roger Norton, Executive Director of the Office for Latin American Programs, and Dr. Jennifer Brown, Director of the Texas A&M University Center in Mexico.

During the visit, the delegation toured the PIIT (Research and Technology Innovation Park), including research facilities of CIDESI (Engineering and Industrial Development Center), CINVESTAV (Center of Advanced Studies and Research), among others. The delegation also attended the Border Governors Conference and participated in discussions of the Science and Technology Committee.
 
August 24-28, 2009: Mr. Juan Carlos Villa and Mr. Manuel Solari from
the Texas Transportation Institute held meetings at the Mexico Center
Juan Carlos Villa and Manuel Solari from the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) utilized office space at the Mexico Center during the week of August 24-28, 2009. They are working on a project for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRD). The project´s objective is to assess Mexico´s experience with long commercial vehicles. Mr. Villa is also working on a project for the development of a master plan for a logistics center in Tula, Hidalgo.

 
July 27-29, 2009: Texas A&M Department Head of Mechanical Engineering Visits Universidad de Guanajuato
July 27 - 29, Dr. Dennis O’Neal, Department Head of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M; Dr. Dan McAdams, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering; and Dr. Jennifer Brown, Director of the Mexico Center, traveled to Irapuato and Salamanca, Guanajuato, for meetings concerning the Mechanical Engineering cultural exchange program and future collaboration with the Universidad de Guanajuato . The Texas A&M delegation met with the Rector General, Dr. Arturo Lara; the Rector of Campus Guanajuato, Dr. Luis Felipe Guerrero; and the Rector of Campus Irapuato-Salamanca, Ing. René Jaime Rivas.



During the trip, Dr. Brown also visited CINVESTAV (Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados) in Irapuato. CINVESTAV is an advanced research institution that offers graduate programs and performs research in the areas of biotechnology, biochemistry, and genetic engineering. She met with Dr. Rafael Rivera, Director of CINVESTAV Irapuato; Dr. Luis Herrera, Professor and Director of Langebio; and Dr. Jean Philippe Vielle, Senior Professor of the National Laboratory of Genomics for Biodiversity (and former student of Texas A&M), to discuss current and future collaboration with Texas A&M.

 
July 9, 2009: Mexico Center meets with Director General and Faculty of Monterrey Tec (ITESM) - Campus Cuernavaca
On July 9, 2009, Dr. Jennifer Brown and Lic. Ana Arenas traveled to Cuernavaca, Morelos, to meet with Dr. Alejandra Vilalta, Director General of Monterrey Tec (ITESM) - Campus Cuernavaca; Dr. Ricardo Thierry, Director of Extension (and former student of Texas A&M); Lic. Antoaneta Antonova, Director of Internationalization; and Prof. Brian Decheverry, Director of the Language Center. Brown and Arenas were given a tour of the campus, and opportunities for academic exchanges and other programs were discussed during a lunch meeting with the ITESM delegation.
 
June 22, 2009: Brown Meets with President of Universidad de Guanajuato, Campus Irapuato-Salamanca and Mayor of the City of Salamanca
On June 22, 2009, Dr. Jennifer Brown traveled to Irapuato, Guanajuato to meet with M. en I. René Jaime Rivas, President of the Universidad de Guanajuato, Campus Irapuato-Salamanca, and university administrators to understand the institution´s strengths and areas for on-going and future collaboration with Texas A&M.
 
June 16, 2009: Texas A&M Delegation Meets with the Mexican Ministry of Energy, CONACYT, and the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture (SAGARPA)
On June 16, 2009, the following delegation of Texas A&M administrators participated in meetings with the Mexican Ministry of Energy, CONACYT, and the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture (SAGARPA): Ambassador Eric M. Bost (ret.), Vice President for Global Initiatives; Dr. Mark Hussey, Vice Chancellor and Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences; Dr. Eleanor Green, Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine; Dr. Jorge Vanegas, Dean of the College of Architecture; Dr. Robert Webb, Interim Dean of Graduate Studies; Dr. Emily Y. Ashworth, Executive Associate Vice President for International Programs; Dr. Michael Pishko, Department Head of Chemical Engineering; Dr. Gale Wagner, Professor of Veterinary Medicine; Mr. Francisco Alcalá, Chair of the Mexico Center External Advisory Board; Mr. Pablo Marvin, Member of the Mexico Center External Advisory Board; Dr. Roger Norton, Executive Director of the Office for Latin American Programs; and Dr. Jennifer Brown, Director of the Mexico Center.


Members of the delegation met with the Secretary of Energy, Dr. Georgina Kessel Martínez; Undersecretary of Hydrocarbons, Mario Gabriel Budebo
; and Mr. Guillermo Güemez, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Mexico, to discuss potential collaboration in energy research.








The delegation also met with the General Director of CONACYT, Mtro. Juan Carlos Romero Hicks, and CONACYT´s Director of Policies and International Collaboration in Science and Technology, Dr. Manuel Ontiveros, to discuss current and future collaboration in bi-national research and graduate student exchanges.






During a lunch meeting with the Mexican Undersecretary of Agribusiness, Mr. Jeffrey Max Jones; the General Director of Economic Research and Planning, Dr. René Ochoa; and the Adjunct General Director of Economic Analysis and Public Policy, Dr. Pablo Sherwell Cabello, Deans Mark Hussey, Eleanor Green and Jorge Vanegas discussed the strong ties between SAGARPA and Texas A&M as well as the strengths of the College of Agricultural and Life Scienes and the College of Veteriniary Medicine. Areas for future collaboration were discussed.

 
June 15, 2009: Texas A&M University Center in Mexico Officially Reopens its Doors
Texas A&M University is pleased to announce the official opening of its new Center in Mexico. Established in 1993, through the generous donation of Pablo Marvin ‘66 and his wife Barbara, the Mexico Center has opened its new doors in the Bosques de Las Lomas corporate zone of Mexico City. The opening ceremonies took place on June 15, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. at the Texas A&M University Center in Mexico. Honoring Pablo and Barbara Marvin and their family was a key element to the event. After the ribbon cutting ceremony, Ambassador Eric M. Bost (Ret.), Vice President for Global Initiatives at Texas A&M, presented a resolution from the Board of Regents that expresses gratitude to the Marvin family, and a plaque in their honor that will hang in the Mexico Center. A Texas A&M delegation headed Ambassador Bost was present for the formal opening and dedication of the facility along with: Ms. Leslie Bassett, Chargé d’ Affaires, U.S. Embassy in Mexico; members of the Mexico Center’s External Advisory Board; the Center´s University Advisory Committee; distinguished university leaders from partner institutions.

June 15, 2009 Former Student Meeting at the Texas A&M University Center in Mexico
As part of the Mexico Center´s opening ceremonies on June 15, 2009, about 30 former students of Texas A&M met with Ambassador Eric M. Bost (ret.), Texas A&M Vice President for Global Initiatives; Dr. Jorge Vanegas, Dean of the College of Architecture; Dean Mark Hussey, Vice Chancellor and Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences; Dr. Eleanor Green, Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine; Dr. Robert Webb, Interim Dean of Graduate Studies; and Dr. Emily Ashworth, Executive Associate Vice President for International Programs. The purpose of the meeting was to begin to form a solid and active group of former students residing in Mexico. Ambassador Bost and the Deans dialogued with the former students about their expectations and ideas in revitalizing the Aggie Club in Mexico City and other parts of the country.

June 8, 2009: Dr. Roger Norton Appointed as Executive Director of OLAP
Dr. Roger Norton was appointed as Executive Director of the Office for Latin American Programs at Texas A&M University. Dr. Norton is a senior economist, policy advisor and project team leader with experience in 46 countries. He has worked in 20 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean and has lived in Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and Panama. He is fluent in Spanish and can also read Portuguese. Dr. Norton began his duties on June 8, 2009.

June 1, 2009: Texas A&M – CONACYT Proposal Review Session
On June 1, 2009, CONACYT and Texas A&M representatives met at the Mexico Center for the Proposal Review Session of the Texas A&M-CONACYT Collaborative Research Grant Program. 17 proposals were selected in areas of Engineering, Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, Philosophy and Humanities, Marine Science and Oceanography, Animal Science, Soil and Crop Sciences, Horticultural Sciences, Health and Kinesiology, and Chemistry.
 
May 25-July 31, 2009: Mexico Internship Program has been CANCELLED
The first annual Mexico Internship Program that was scheduled for May 25-July 31, 2009, has been canceled due to the swine flu in Mexico. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Marti Marberry or Ashley Haguewood.

April 23, 2009: Rector of Universidad de Guanajuato Campus Irapuato-Salamanca Visits Mexico Center
On April 23, 2009, the Rector of Universidad de Guanajuato Campus Irapuato-Salamanca, M. en I. René Jaime Rivas, and Dr. Abel Hernández, Professor in the Division of Engineering, met with Dr. Jennifer Brown at the Mexico Center to discuss existing and future collaboration between Texas A&M and the Universidad de Guanajuato, Campus Irapuato-Salamanca. Dr. Brown plans to visit their campus in June.
 
April 21-23, 2009: CUDI Spring Meeting in Puebla
Mr. Manuel Soberanes, Computing and Communications Coordinator of the Mexico Center, attended the Spring 2009 meeting of Corporación Universitaria para el Desarrollo de Internet, A.C. (CUDI), which was held at the Universidad de las Américas in Puebla on April 21-23, 2009. Celebrating ten years of the foundation of CUDI, 430 researchers, faculty, and students from 203 institutions participated in 9 workshops and 55 presentations related to applications used by the network coordinated by CUDI.
 
Mexico Internship Deadline Extended to April 15, 2009
There are still two internships with the Mexican Secretary of Agriculture (SAGARPA) available through the Mexico Internship Program. The office of economic analysis and planning of the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture is seeking 2 junior/senior year students or graduate students for an internship position in the summer of 2009. Preferred candidates should have a strong background in agricultural economics, microeconomics, econometrics or political science. The candidate will be collaborating in agricultural economic analysis and research for key Mexican commodities. Mexican citizenship and Spanish language proficiency is required. The deadline for application has been extended to April 15, 2009.
 
March 30-31, 2009: Brown Meets with General Director of CIDESI and Researchers of Computer Based Screening for Diabetic Retinopathy.
Dr. Jennifer Brown traveled to the Mexican northern cities of Monterrey and Saltillo. In Monterrey, she met with Ing. Felipe Rubio, General Director of CIDESI (Centro de Ingeniería y Desarrollo Industrial). Ing. Rubio along with the local Director of CIDESI, Ing. David Fredin, gave Dr. Brown a tour of the research facilities as well as an informal presentation about Texas A&M and CIDESI sharing the use of space for collaborative research in Texas A&M´s Research Park and CIDESI´s facilities located in Monterrey´s Research and Technological Innovation Park (Parque de Investigación e Innovación Tecnológica – PIIT).





In Saltillo, Dr. Brown met with Dr. Steve Liu of the Department of Computer Science at Texas A&M and Dr. Rafael Chorne, ophthalmologist and retired professor and researcher of the Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the status of the clinical trials of the collaborative research on Computer Based Screening for Diabetic Retinopathy.



















 
March 19, 2009: Texas A&M Undergraduate Student Groups Visit Mexico City
On March 19, 2009, the Mexico Center hosted two groups of Texas A&M undergraduate students participating in Freshmen Field Trips sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Studies at Texas A&M. Dr. Lynne Walters led 17 undergrads, one graduate student and two faculty members from the College of Education and Human Resource Development. Dr. Danielle Harris led 11 students from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Both groups visited Mexico City during spring break and coordinated their programs with Universidad La Salle. Presentations were given to the students and faculty at the Mexico Center concerning the educational system of Mexico as well as a general overview of the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture (SAGARPA).

 
March 17, 2009: Lic. Norma Rodriguez Joins Mexico Center Staff
On March 17, 2009, Lic. Norma Rodriguez started as the new Executive Assistant at the Texas A&M University Center in Mexico. She is a native of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico and graduated from Instituto de Intérpretes y Traductores with a Bachelor’s Degree in Translation. For the past 13 years, she has worked for two top headhunters: Korn/Ferry International and Russell Reynolds Associates as Executive Assistant to the Director of Technology and to the Director of Financial Services, respectively. She also worked for Atos Origin as Executive Assistant to the Managing Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.

 
February 5, 2009: Delegation of the Texas A&M Global Manufacturing and Distribution Research Initiative Visit the Mexico Center
On February 5, 2009, a delegation of the Texas A&M Global Manufacturing and Distribution Research Initiative visited the Mexico Center. Co-directors Dr. Barry Lawrence and Dr. V. Jorge Leon along with Mr. Carlos Acosta and Mr. Francisco Villanueva toured the Center´s facilities and met with Dr. Jennifer Brown. The Mexico Center provides support services to the Initiative such as the hiring of Mr. Acosta and Mr. Villanueva to work in Monterrey, Mexico in office space provided by CIDESI (Centro de Ingeniería y Desarrollo Industrial) as well as managing their working fund. During the visit, Dr. Brown provided the delegation with a presentation on the services the Mexico Center can provide to Texas A&M entities. Future collaboration was discussed such as potential professional development courses to be offered at the Mexico Center.
 
February 4, 2009: CONACYT Research Networks Conference
On February 4, 2009, Dr. Jennifer Brown attended the CONACYT “Red de Redes” Conference in Querétaro, Querétaro. The goal of the conference was to “promote and strengthen the building and development of domestic scientific networks on strategic subjects that provide a solution to scientific, technologic and social problems and supply the academy-company linkage.” The conference was organized by CONACYT and the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Unidad Iztapalapa.
 
January 29-30, 2009: Delegation from Dwight Look College of Engineering Visits Mexico
On January 29-30, 2009, a delegation led by Dr. John M. Niedzwecki from Texas A&M´s Dwight Look College of Engineering visited the Mexico Center and the Universidad National Autónoma de México (UNAM). Meetings at UNAM resulted in plans for a joint graduate program between Texas A&M and UNAM as well as potential exchange programs for students and faculty that will allow them to jointly conduct research in civil, petroleum and chemical engineering. During the visit, letters of intent were signed between the two institutions in which the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering, the Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering and the Zachry Department of Civil Engineering plan to explore and develop projects in several areas of interest with the engineering faculty and students of UNAM.

January 20, 2009: Texas A&M – CONACYT Proposal Review Session
On January 20, 2009, CONACYT and Texas A&M representatives met at Texas A&M University for the Proposal Review Session of the Texas A&M-CONACYT Collaborative Research Grant Program. 15 proposals were selected in areas of Entomology, Marine Sciences and Oceanography, Engineering, Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, Nutrition and Food Science, Poultry Science, and Marine Biology.
 
January 12, 2009: Mexico Center Informal External Advisory Board Meeting
On January 12, 2009, an informal Mexico Center External Advisory Board Meeting took place at the Mexico Center in Mexico City. The Board discussed short and long-term goals of the Mexico Center. The following people attended the meeting: Mr. Francisco Alcalá, Chair of the Board; Mr. Taft Symonds, Board Member; Mr. Pablo Marvin, Board Member; Dr. Emily Y. Ashworth, Executive Associate Vice President for International Programs; Dr. Jennifer Brown, Director of the Texas A&M University Center in Mexico; Mr. John Crawford, Assistant Vice President for Finance & Controller; Mr. Andre Josiah, Director of Business Affairs, International Programs Office.

November 13, 2008: México - Texas Trade Corridor Consortium Meeting
Dr. Jennifer Brown attended the first México - Texas Trade Corridor Consortium meeting on November 13, 2008, in Laredo, TX. This conference provided initial research findings from Texas A&M University on creating manufacturing opportunities in this region.



Dr. Jennifer G. Sherwell-Brown Appointed as Director of the Mexico Center
The International Programs Office announced the appointment of Dr. Jennifer G. Sherwell-Brown as the Director of the Texas A&M University Center in Mexico in November 2008.
Brown earned a bachelor’s degree in International Studies with a focus on Latin America from Texas A&M in May 1997, and a MBA from Texas Tech University in August 2000. She received her Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Texas A&M in December 2006. Full article

 
November 3-7, 2008: Dr. Ron Knutson Meets with SAGARPA Colleagues at the Mexico Center
The Mexico Center provided meeting space during the week of November 3 -7, to Dr. Ron Knutson from the Texas A&M Food Policy Center and his counterparts from the Mexican Department of Agriculture (SAGARPA). They conducted follow-up meetings at the Mexico Center concerning their model for the 2008 Farm Bill impacts on Mexican agriculture. They also met at the former Mexico Center in August of this year.
 
October 9, 2008: Initial Operations at Mexico Center New Facility
On October 9, the Mexico Center staff officially began working out of the new offices in Bosques de las Lomas. After cleaning, donating used items, packing, moving, and unpacking, the staff is to be congratulated on all of their hard work for a smooth transition. With newly polished wooden walls and marble flooring in the hallways, the center exudes an elegant and formal atmosphere. With one of the two videoconference rooms still involved in minor renovation efforts, the new Mexico Center is almost ready to completely resume normal programming.

 
Texas A&M and CONACYT Renew Research Agreement
In August 2008, Texas A&M University and Mexico´s National Council of Science and Technology (El Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología, CONACYT) signed the 2008-2010 Agreement of Cooperation in Research. This agreement, an extension of the 2001-2006 agreement, addresses opportunities for bilateral research between Texas A&M and institutions in Mexico. The Texas A&M University-CONACYT Collaborative Research Grant Program established under the original agreement will continue under the 2008-2010 extension.
 
Mexico Center Provides Support Services for a Texas A&M-SAGARPA Agricultural Policy Analysis Meeting
During the week of August 11-15, the Mexico Center hosted Dr. Ron Knutson, professor emeritus from Texas A&M’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. At the Mexico Center, he met with Dr. Pablo Sherwell and Mr. Javier Sarinana from SAGARPA (Mexico’s Department of Agriculture) and Dr. Pat Westoff from the University of Missouri. The objective of the meeting was to develop a preliminary policy analysis model, run the model to evaluate the impacts of the 2008 Farm Bill on Mexican agriculture, and draft a report of the results.
